What exactly is hard water?
Hard water is caused by high concentrations of specific minerals (or dissolved rock) in water. The majority of Arizona's water contains excessive amounts of the hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium. 
Soap reacts with those hard water minerals leaving an ugly white residue (soap curd) that is difficult to remove from shower doors, tubs etc.
